Katherine Grace, 15, was diagnosed with autism at age 3. In the past year she was also diagnosed with prodromal schizophrenia, a preliminary phase of a worsening psychosis. But her diagnoses hardly define her. She is an artist, an honor student, an abnormaly amazing Mario-Kart player and so much more. She lives in low-income housing in Santa Monica with her single mother, Lisa Davenport.
Lisa, 49 has financial struggles and suffers from depression caused by childhood trauma. Mother and daughter relationships are often rocky under the most normal of circumstances. Despite their hurdles, both together and alone, they are beautifully intertwined. This is an ongoing photo essay that documents the intimate moments of Katherine and Lisa’s relationship.
